The Advantages of a Custom Made Necktie

The advantage of the custom made tie

Fortunately, we are all different. We are of different height and weight. We have different neck sizes. And of course, we have different tastes. It would be terribly boring if we all looked the same.

When you purchase a necktie, you should carefully consider all of the above factors and make sure that you buy a tie that fits your body and style. However, stores rarely provided you with those possibilities. To get the right tie, you should have it custom made.

If you are not sure what size or fabric best serve your needs, our experts will guide you through the process of making the right decisions.

THE LENGHT

First of all, you need to get right length. Nothing looks worse than an ill fitting tie, especially when it is too short or too long. However, to get a longer or shorter tie, it is not enough to simply add / cut a couple of inches. You need to redesign the blade (the wider front part of the tie).

When deciding length, you also need to think about your preferred knot. If you like a full Windsor, for example, you will need a longer tie.

THE BLADE

The blade, the wider, front part, of the tie, has to be just right. If you are a tall man, and the blade of the tie is too short, then the knot is going to be very small. (See image A).

Therefore, it is very important that the blade is designed to fit you body. In other words, the blade needs to start to narrow at the right point. The man in image B has a tie with a blade that fits him. And you can see what a difference it makes.

It doesn’t matter what size you are — what matter is that you get a tie that fits, something a custom made tie will ensure.

THE WIDTH

The width of the tie is equally important. To some extent the width is determined by taste. You might simply prefer a wider or narrower tie. But the width is also determined by your size. If you are a slim guy, a wide tie will look very wide. If you are a bigger guy, a narrow tie will look very narrow. It is all about proportions.

Below is an example of a narrow and a wide tie. They both look good. If you are unsure which one you prefer, we will help decide.

THICKNESS / INTERLINING

When you custom make a tie, you get to decide how thick you want it to be. Some of our customers prefer a thicker tie, which means that we will add a layer of interlining.

The interlining is very important. The Italians call it the “Soul of the Necktie.” A quality interlining will ensure that the tie hangs straight and that it lasts. We purchase our interlining from a small will in Italy, from where the below photos are taken. Yes, it is a little more expensive, and you will not find this interlining in most store bought ties, but we think it is worth it.

FABRIC

Then, of course, there is the fabric. The colors. The patterns. We have 100s of different fabrics to chose from. And if we don’t have it in stock, we can get it. We have classic, timeless designs; we have the wild and crazy; and we have everything in between.

MIX / MATCH FABRIC

There might be occasions where one fabric is not enough. You might want a fabric for the blade and another for the tail (the narrower part of the tie). Or you might want one fabric for the knot and another one for the blade. When you custom make a tie, everything is possible. The only limit is your imagination.

Custom Design Fabric

If you need a tie with a logo, or a tie with a very specific color combination, then we can design the fabric. We are able to print it or weave it. We can make one or 1,000. For example, we make all neckties, bow ties, and scarves for the Harvard Lampoon.
