The Seven-Fold: The Bentley of Neckties.
The seven-fold necktie is the Bentley of ties. It is expensive, unnecessary, beautiful and indulgent. A cut or two above any standard necktie, a seven-fold tie wears its breeding on the inside. The “seven” refers to the number of times the rich fabric (we only use 100% silk) is folded into itself, origami-style, to form the shape of the tie without adding in a lining. Borrowing from the ascot and the cravat in construction and material, it’s the modern embodiment of upper-crust neckwear.
The seven-fold has a thicker feel, incomparable drape, a larger, fuller, knot, and a more hefty weight – all these unique features are immediately noticed the first time you hold it in your hand.
The seven-fold became popular at the end of the 19th Century when a customer would purchase the tie from his tailor. After being presented with a wide range of colors and patterns, the gentleman would make his selection. The tailor would take a yard of fabric and carefully fold the silk a total of 7 times. Though the construction sounds simple enough, it takes great skill, time, and fabric. Of course, today skill and time are in short supply. In fact, no machine can make a seven -fold tie, only a skilled tailor can. Thus, a true seven-fold tie is a rarity. Lindman New York is one of a few establishments that still makes these neckties.
Customers, however, must be aware of fake seven-folds. There are many companies that seek to take advantage of the seven-fold's name and produce a hybrid namesake necktie with some aesthetic similarities, but none of the practical virtues. These ties have the series of folds that is observable at the bottom end of the tie, however, careful examination of thickness at mid-tie exposes the sudden end of the silk folds. Comparatively, these faux seven-fold neckties don't behave as do true seven-fold four-in-hand neckties.
Lindman New York is proud to continue the tradition of making seven-fold ties. Like the customer a Centry ago, you are able to select your fabric from a wide range of colors and patterns. And once you made your selection, we will create a one of kind seven-fold tie.
